The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
