American Attack on Venezuela Fuels Anxieties of Future Danish Territory Takeover.

The recent American strike in Venezuela and the seizure of its president have renewed unease regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's political movement have allegedly focused on the vast island following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Backlash

Only a short time after the initiation of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative commentator, who is married to a senior White House adviser, shared a symbolic map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that Denmark had significantly boosted its military budget recently, earmarking a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we demand complete respect for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Interests

The tensions were additionally complicated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly thanked the president, saying it was an "privilege" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this envoy praised the president's actions, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for national security and future resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying global rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Friction and Local Resistance

In response to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants desire independence from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Expert View: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One policy analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had once discounted the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could do anything about it," she observed.
