A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
